In 2009, Frank Strobel, Music Director of the European FilmPhilarmonic Institute, asked me to "revisit" the music of a great silent film classic: Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, directed by Robert Wiene in 1920.

The musical style varies from post-romantic to impressionistic, and even, for some of the more brutal scenes, atonal. Each character or key scene is associated with a leitmotif that is subject to slight variations throughout the film.

The score features some 800 points of synchronization with the image, to ensure a precise match between music and film.

Created in its initial version (before restoration of the film) with the "Neue Frankfurter Philharmonie" (2011), this new score has been performed on numerous occasions around the world, notably in Qatar (Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra 2017), Brazil (Mostra internacional de cinema dem São Paulo 2019) or more recently, in 2022 with the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra and the "Stuttgarter Philharmoniker", Germany.

For his Sextet, the composer Stéphane Fromageot, born in Paris in 1971, draws inspiration from the language of French music of the 20th century, which he was deeply immersed in during his studies at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris.

Mainly tonal, the three-movement Sextet bears similarities to Francis Poulenc's Sextet for wind instruments and piano (1939), a well-known piece in this repertoire.

Notably, it combines the unique colors of the wind instruments with virtuosic and rich piano writing.

During the premiere on March 11, 2018, Stéphane Fromageot performed on the piano, accompanied by soloists from the Saint-Gall Symphony Orchestra.
